As if he didn’t wear enough hats as it is (disco legend, super-car company owner, Daft Punk collaborator), Giorgio Moroder has taken on the new hobby of DJing! Although it is a little crazy to realize considering his pedigree, influence, and sheer longevity in dance and popular music, the Italian record producer has never actually spun records behind the decks. The Red Bull Music Academy, known for pulling out all the stops for their showcases, was able to orchestrate an incredible environment for Giorgio’s first set at Brooklyn’s Output. The intimate space and the club’s already renowned dim lighting made for the perfect setting as Moroder, with the help of his musical director Chris Cox, sent the crowd back in time in a synthesized frenzy. The most amazing part of the whole set was its surprising variety and how in sync the different realms of electronic music used worked together. Moroder’s new original track for Google “The Racer Experience,” with its powerful piano chords and moving build ups, found its home in his set just as much as “Love to Love You, Baby” did (the ground shook with vibrant sensuality as the whole crowd sang along to late Donna Summer’s iconic hit). The immensely captivating set Giorgio delivered would make you believe Giorgio has been spinning in the booth all his life, a testament to his legendary musical prowess and sensibility. Without a doubt, the classic disco tracks played were the highlight of the time, considering that most, if not all, came to fruition and changed the scope of popular music for years to come thanks to Giorgio himself. Dropping tracks like Summers’ “Bad Girls” and the Three Degrees’ classic “Jump the Gun,” Giorgio gave the crowd at Output a night not to remember.
